AHOC Research Activites
A health outcome is a change in the health of an individual,
a group or population, which is wholly or partially attributable
to an intervention or series of interventions. AHMAC Sunshine
Statement, February 1993; modified NHIMG 1996.
Project Inclusion Requirements
The essence of health outcomes studies is the measurement
of changes in health status that can be attributed to a health
intervention. The intervention may be of a health promotion,
health protection, clinical service or a social service nature.
Health outcomes may relate to changes in physical, psychological
or social functioning and may be measured on either a single
or multi-dimensional scale.
Please download and complete the research activites database
proforma to keep us up to date with what you are doing in
the way of health outcomes studies or activities so that we
can keep others informed. Issues of confidentiality are addressed
on the final page of the proforma. Please submit a proforma
for each relevant study. If there is insufficient space provided,
please attach additional pages. You may also wish to submit
additional materials that provide further details on your
study (eg. published articles, research proposals, examples
of research instruments, etc...)
AHOC Research Activities
database proforma
Through the Health Outcomes Research Activities Database,
the Collaboration is seeking to document and make available
to others, information on the following activities:
1. Development of measures and descriptors of health outcomes
and related health status measures
- The development of new instruments, or adaptation of existing
measures that describe health outcomes/status or quality
of life;
- Comparison of clinical measurements (eg. physiological,
psychological, or functional) with more general measures
of health status;
- Studies of the acceptability, validity, reliability,
sensitivity and utility of new or existing instruments;
- The development of severity of illness/stage of disease
measures.
2. Health outcomes measurement projects
- Experimental (eg. randomised control trials) and quasi-experimental
research on the effectiveness of interventions (eg. using
pre- and post-intervention measurements);
- Comparisons of actual treatment outcomes with outcomes
assumed for the purposes of ‘Consensus Guideline Development’;
- Comparative studies using group or regional data to assess
the effectiveness of different interventions or provide
insight into a specific health issue;
- Measurement of health outcomes (eg. quality of life measures)
for treatments for different conditions.
3. Development of methods for health outcomes measurement
- The use of randomised control trials in health outcome
assessment;
- The use of non-random control methodologies that seek
to develop valid and reliable information on health outcomes;
- The use of survey methods that seek to develop valid
and reliable information on health outcomes;
- Linkage studies using routinely generated data (which
may be augmented by special collections);
4. Other studies
- eg. routine use of general health outcomes measures in
clinical practice to supplement clinical information;
- eg. patient satisfaction surveys that provide some measure,
or insight into the change in subsequent function or health
of patients.
